The Restoring Ancient Stabiae Project

Restoring Ancient Stabiae is a collaboration work that could be considered unique, because it joins Italian and American communities forces in a project that aims to the valorization of an important site, and at the same time, to the preservation of this precious artistic legacy for the future generations. Restoring Ancient Stabiae, that was born through an agreement of collaboration that sets as an objective the creation of an "archaeological park" for the ancient Stabiae - "lost" vesuvian town, obscured by the fame of its famous neighbours Pompei and Ercolano - is a scientific cooperation created in March 1988 between the Archaeological Superintendence of Pompei and the faculty of Architecture of the university of Maryland. One year late, the America Academy in Rome, joined in the project as a co-sponsor.

Through the scientific work done by the professors of the University of Maryland, who have collaborated with the staff of Superintendence to the elaboration of a Master Plan, in the organization of an archaeological survey of the site, in the planning of new infrastructures and administration systems, in the study of new systems of covering to preserve the rooms of the ancient roman villas partially excavated, Restoring Ancient Stabiae has made use of coming from New York, Texas and California studious and professionals' work and cooperation. Thanks to the participation of a representation team of the Restoring Ancient Stabiae project to the meeting of march 2000, organized to celebrate the anniversary of 250 years from the discovery of ancient Stabiae, Restoring Ancient Stabiae website (http://www.inform.umd.edu/ARCH/stabia.html) will soon become the international keeper for all those studiouses who would publish, in our internet pages, researches and articles from their works about ancient Stabiae.

At last, the sphere of Restoring Ancient Stabiae goes ahead the specific limit of the site. Thanks to the generous and brilliant sup port of "Stabiae renatae" committee, the Restoring Ancient Stabiae project has become the centre of a complex and stimulating cultural exchange between American studiouses, American professionals and designers, American students and the Italian intellectual and cultural community from Castellammare di Stabia that gathers 18 among associations and schools of the place. Moreover, the planned activities foreseen that the study and the planning of the archaeological park will be included in the actual process of urban revitalization of Castellammare di Stabia. Restoring Ancient Stabiae project, for the complete realization of the Stabiae archaeological park, on 7 February 2002, through the enterprise of the University of Maryland has been founded at Italian Embassy in Washington the Restoring Ancient Stabiae onlus foundation with its seat in Pompei, its president is the archaeological superintendence professor Pietro Giovanni Guzzo. This foundation is already strongly operating to the collecting of private funds and public contributes to realize, in the space of 10 years, the ancient Stabiae Great Archaeological Park.

It is essential that the town in all its cultural, scholastic, associative and public expressions, joint with enthusiasm, like it has already been and it is being, to this occasion so sole and unrepeatable.
